Ipswich Town set to sign 26-y/o on free transfer

Former Wigan Athletic manager Lee Evans is set to become Ipswich Town’s second summer signing, according to East Anglian Daily Times.

The midfielder is due in Suffolk this weekend for a medical and then will put pen to paper on a contract. He will follow Wes Burns who joined Ipswich yesterday from fellow League One side Fleetwood Town.

The Tractor Boys’ new CEO, Mark Ashton started his new job officially on Tuesday and now looks set to complete his first two signings in the space of the first week. Evans played a central role during all three of Paul Cook’s seasons in charge at Wigan, twice being brought in on loan, first from Wolves and then from Sheffield United, before signing permanently in January 2019.

During that time Wigan won the League One title and were looking to be a steady Championship club until their shock administration came. The Welsh international was one of three players who stayed at the DW despite their financial concerns. He had a period on the sidelines with injury but was back in the side three months later.

The 26-year-old appeared 21 times for the Latics this season, scoring two goals and assisting a further two. Evans’ deal expires this month but was offered fresh terms by manager Liam Richardson under the new ownership.

However, he didn’t accept the offer and now looks set to sign and reunite with Cook at Ipswich. The midfielder brings a wealth of Championship experience, from his time at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Wigan. Evans will be the type of midfielder Cook will look to build his side around and hopefully help him get another League One promotion on his CV.
