Swansea City set to sign Premier League defender on season-long loan

Swansea City are set to sign Liverpool defender Rhys Williams on a season-long loan, with Russell Martin keen to add more defensive options on deadline day, reports the Daily Mail.

Williams enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Anfield last season with the defender handed the chance to come into the side during Liverpool’s defensive injury crisis. In total, the defender managed to make nine appearances in the Premier League and also a further six in the UEFA Champions League for Jurgen Klopp’s side last term.

However, at the start of this season Williams has found himself down the pecking order once again at Anfield after the returns of Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez from long-term injury. While they also brought in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.

Now according to this report, Liverpool are going to allow the defender to leave the club on loan for the rest of the campaign to keep his career developing.

It’s believed Swansea have won the race for the Welsh international and he now looks set to link up with the Swans once the international break is over.

My View

This seems a very smart and sensible signing from Swansea on deadline day. The Swans look set to lose Jamal Lowe and Conor Roberts today, so to be able to get Williams in on a loan deal is very shrewd move by Martin.

Williams needs to get first-team minutes this season and having impressed in the Premier League last term with Liverpool, he looks well set for a long career at a high level over the next few years.

However, the defender is not going to be able to force his way into Liverpool’s side during the rest of the campaign this season. Therefore it would not make any sense to keep him at the club where he will not be making regular appearances.

He also fits the profile that Swansea and Martin are looking for, he’s a defender who is comfortable in possession and can read the game very well for a young man. Martin has a good record of developing loan stars under his guidance, with Ethan Laird a great example.
