Cardiff City identify 50-year-old as potential McCarthy successor

Cardiff City have had a terrible start to the Sky Bet Championship and with no win in eight games Mick McCarthy was shown the exit door, now the Bluebirds could be set to turn to Derek McInnes, reports the Daily Mail.

Cardiff have managed only three wins in 14 Championship games this season and that has seen the Welsh side slide down the table to 21st, just two points above the relegation zone.  The play-off places that they would have arguably liked to challenge for this year are already stretching further and further out of reach, with the club now ten points adrift of sixth place.

McCarthy joined the Bluebirds at the back end of last season and the 62-year-old did extremely well in steadying the ship and making a late charge for a play-off place. However, from the back the final few games of last season and now into this campaign Cardiff’s form has been dreadful and Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough was the final straw.

There’s been plenty of names linked with the vacant role, Wales manager Rob Page, Jody Morris and Michael Beale. Now the latest name to be thrown into the hat is former Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes. The 50-year-old has previous experience in the EFL, managing Bristol City in the Championship.

The Robins were struggling in the second tier when he first began to lead the club and he managed to keep them up before eventually being handed the sack.

England isn’t the only breadth of experience he has so far, having also been to Scotland and handled the affairs of both St Johnstone and most recently, Aberdeen. He won the Scottish League Cup with the latter of the two and with the former, he took them to the Scottish First Division title. He was with Aberdeen for eight years but now finds himself out of work and a return to the Championship and the EFL may now be on the cards.

My View

McInnes is probably a surprise name to many Cardiff fans and probably want be a first-choice amongst the supporters. However, the 50-year-old could be a solid appointment for Cardiff with the current turmoil the club is in. His time in England didn’t set the world alight, but during his time in Scotland he showed he was able to build a decent challenging squad that broke up the Celtic, Rangers top two.

McInnes made his side hard to beat and managed to build a side that played some decent football, but this was all done because he was given sufficient time which is what is needed at Cardiff. The Bluebirds need to make an appointment soon and be patient enough to back the manager for the long-term and not expect wonders straight away.

Another reason why McInnes could be a sensible choice is because Cardiff’s chairman Mehmet Dalman confirmed that there is unlikely going to be any money available in January and next summer. So therefore, the new boss is going to splash the cash to build his own side and with his experience at Aberdeen with very little budget, McInnes could be the ideal candidate.
