Portsmouth open talks to sign 26-yo EFL player on loan

Portsmouth have opened talks with Middlesbrough about the signing of midfielder Lewis Wing, reports Football Insider.

The 26-year-old is currently on loan at League One side Sheffield Wednesday however he could see his loan terminated to allow a move to Fratton Park.

The report states that it would also be a loan move to the south coast, with Wing struggling for regular minutes over the last couple of months.

Wing proved to be a top performer for Rotherham United last season, in a campaign that ultimately ended in relegation.

Wing has also struggled for game time at parent club Middlesbrough but maybe a move to Portsmouth and the hope of regular game time means he can impress his permanent employers.

Wing is primarily a holding midfielder but can also play slightly more advanced as a number 10 and on the left wing.

Wing has great technical ability and great fight which showed when he was in the Rotherham United side last season that fought bravely against relegation. It’s somewhat of a surprise that Wednesday haven’t used Wing more this season, considering he’s a player who can hurt sides when given the space.

The 26-year-old will be viewing this as another opportunity to impress a new manager, although, with Premier League football the ultimate ambition for Middlesbrough, it remains to be seen if Wing would remain at the Riverside Stadium, should Boro secure promotion.
