Rotherham United wing-back Chiedozie Ogbene has been linked with several Championship teams this summer – but Millers boss Paul Warne has stated that the club are yet to receive any offers for the player.
The Millers played their football in League One last season and Ogbene was one of the side’s most important players during the campaign. He played in a total of 45 games and produced four goals with five assists as the club sealed another promotion to the Championship.
Now, the player will be hoping to get a chance to prove himself in England’s second division as last time the Millers were there, Ogbene only managed six starts.
However, that chance may not necessarily come at Rotherham, as several Sky Bet Championship sides are keen on signing the wing-back this summer on the back of his impressive season.
One of the clubs who want to try and sign him is Swansea, who are looking to try and push on up the division under Russell Martin. The side want another wing-back option and it appears Ogbene is the man they want to play in that role for the club.
However, quoted by Wales Online about Ogbene and the interest in the player, manager Paul Warne has revealed that the club haven’t received an offer for the defender as of yet.
Speaking about the player and the interest, Warne said: “In fairness, I’d rather him play brilliantly now because if it’s going to happen, it might as well happen. There’s no point in it happening on the eve of the window, and then I get told, ‘unlucky’ if only it had been [earlier].
“But as it stands at the moment, I’ve had no calls for him. The chairman doesn’t want to sell him, he’s in the last year of his contract, I’m not even convinced the lad wants to go, so we’re in a good place.”
It is no surprise that Ogbene has now caught the attention of Championship sides, as he is a very solid player who impressed a lot as a wing-back last season.
Considering that the Millers used him often last season and he now has plenty of EFL experience under his belt, he could be quite a football player in the second tier. Swansea need a wing-back and Ogbene is arguably one of the most talented options in the Football League.
If Russell Martin can seal a transfer deal for the player, then it would be a very good piece of business. However, the Millers won’t let him go easily and will demand that the price they have in mind is met.
